What Is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha — the Festival of Sacrifice — is one of the two major holidays in Islam. It falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah and commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (peace be upon him) obedience to Allah in his willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail.

It coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage and is celebrated by Muslims worldwide through prayer, sacrifice (qurbani), and generosity.

Key Dates for 2026

Eid al-Adha 2026 is expected to fall in late May or early June 2026 (exact date depends on moon sighting). The days of sacrifice are the 10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul Hijjah.

The Qurbani Obligation

Qurbani (udhiyah) is wajib for every adult Muslim with wealth above nisab. The sacrifice should be performed after Eid prayer and before sunset on the 12th of Dhul Hijjah.

The meat is traditionally divided into thirds: one-third for your family, one-third for friends and neighbors, and one-third for the poor.

Making Your Sacrifice Count

Many Muslims choose to have their qurbani performed in countries where meat is a luxury — ensuring maximum impact. When you give through a trusted organization, your sacrifice reaches families who may not eat meat any other time of year.

Beyond Qurbani: Other Ways to Give on Eid

  • Feed the fasting: Host or sponsor an Eid meal
  • Gift giving: Bring joy to children in need
  • Sadaqah jariyah: Mark the holiday with a gift that lasts
  • Sponsor livestock: Fund animals that breed and produce year-round

UMMA Farm's Livestock Connection

UMMA Farm's livestock program breeds and raises animals year-round. When you support this program, you're not just funding one qurbani — you're investing in a breeding system that produces animals for sacrifice AND daily food production.
