What Is Qurbani (Udhiyah)?

Qurbani — also called udhiyah — is the sacrifice of an animal during Eid al-Adha, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's (peace be upon him) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah.

"It is not their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah; it is your piety that reaches Him." (Quran 22:37)

Who Must Give Qurbani?

According to the majority of scholars, qurbani is wajib (obligatory) for every Muslim who:

  • Is an adult (has reached puberty)
  • Is of sound mind
  • Has wealth above the nisab threshold
  • Is not traveling

One qurbani is given per household (according to most scholars), though individual obligation is the Hanafi position.

Rules of Qurbani

  • Timing: After Eid prayer on 10th Dhul Hijjah through sunset on 12th Dhul Hijjah
  • Animals: Goat/sheep (1 share), cow/buffalo (7 shares), camel (7 shares)
  • Age requirements: Sheep/goat — 1 year+; Cow — 2 years+; Camel — 5 years+
  • Health: Must be healthy with no defects (blindness, lameness, malnutrition, broken horn)
  • Distribution: Traditionally divided into thirds — family, friends/neighbors, the poor

How Much Does Qurbani Cost in 2026?

Costs vary by animal and location:

  • Goat/Sheep: $150-$300 (overseas) | $400-$800 (US/local)
  • Cow share (1/7): $100-$200 (overseas) | $300-$500 (US/local)

UMMA Farm and Livestock

UMMA Farm's livestock program raises animals year-round — not just for qurbani, but as a sustainable food production system. The farm's livestock breeding program means more animals available for sacrifice, and the meat reaches families who need it most.

When you support the livestock program, you're investing in a system that provides qurbani meat AND ongoing food production throughout the year.
